Menopause and the impact on skin
There are many changes that can impact the skin during menopause. A decline in oestrogen that results in a loss of collagen and elastin, dryness, breakouts, thinning and increased sensitivity, especially to the sun, which can cause hyperpigmentation and visible sun damage.
The skin is often much drier during menopause, as there is a decrease in hyaluronic acid and natural moisturising factors on the epidermis of the skin. As a result, it may also feel rough and more irritated than usual.
You may notice skin appears less firm due to a loss in the levels of collagen and elastin which decrease significantly during the menopause. These are essential for structure, support and elasticity of the skin. A lack of these connective tissues leads to wrinkles, sagging skin and jowls.
You can maintain your skin by switching up your skincare routine with targeted products more suited to skin going through these changes.
Gentle cleansers
Switch to gentle, foaming or moisture boosting cleansers enriched with ingredients such as jojoba, papaya and sweet orange to deeply cleanse, remove impurities and makeup, leaving it soft and nourished without stripping moisture.
Moisture boosters
You may notice dryness and sensitivity, so look for products rich in hydration, including ceramides, peptides and hyaluronic acid to help boost moisture, whilst restoring and repairing the skin barrier to keep skin healthy looking, smoother, softer and protected.
Targeted solutions
Retinol and vitamin c are two key actives that help reduce visible signs of ageing are ideal to use during the menopause. They encourage cell renewal; help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and keep skin looking firmer and more cushioned. Look for products rich in peptides, ceramides, AHA’s and glycolic acid to help target fine lines and wrinkles and boost overall skin health.
SPF
Ultraviolet radiation from the sun triggers the skin to produce pigment and during the menopause this can increase further leading to more visible dark spots and discolouration. Using a broad-spectrum SPF daily, SPF30 or higher is ideal to give maximum all round protection against skin damage.
